Nutrient Cycling
Nutrients are essential for the growth of our food, but huge amounts are washed from our fields and lost to the oceans due to poor soil structure. Woodlands use high quality soil structure, intricate root webs and fungal threads to retain nutrients and recycle them within the system. They catch some of these nutrients that would otherwise flow away.
Woodlands also release just enough nutrients into streams and rivers that pass through into the oceans. These nutrients feed algal blooms that in turn help to produce rain that is vital for food production and human well being. The cycling of nutrients in habitats supports their existence and future.
